Racism lol

IMG_8269

“Do you think that Barack Obama is as smart as George Bush, even though Obama’s black?” The Thai homestay-owner, Sam, surprised me with the question, and without even thinking I blurted out, “Of course!” Later, he doled out a little anti-Semitism, not knowing I’m Jewishish, and throughout the night he emphatically displayed sexism. At one point he asked Azure to take a picture of us three men: me, Sam and Ali (a young British traveler). Azure obliged, with a double-edged smile. (read more)

Sleeping over the high tide

IMG_8543

by Mike

Sam says the Thai don’t sleep on soft pads because the fabric against their skin is too hot. Instead they sleep on wicker mats so air can circulate through the floorboards and under their bodies. Besides, he said, he likes to feel the wood on his skin. (read more)

So that night we slept on the porch over the high tide. We listened to the wind and waves. The Muslim call to prayer woke us at 4:30am, clear and present with the wind, and we stayed awake to look at the stars over the water and the sliver moon over the neighbor’s silhouetted house. Distant motors suggested squidboats returning to port in the middle of the channel, but we couldn’t see them: they ran without lights.

Krabi is like…

IMG_8374

by Azure

We flew to Krabi from Singapore. It felt really good to be out on our own again. We had been to Krabi for a night in 2006 on our way to Koh Lanta and decided to spend a few nights there this time around. We rented a scooter and drove northish out of town and hooked back around to some of the beaches. We were immediately struck by the dramatic beauty of the area. Large treed cliffs rise out of the horizon in every direction and the roads are lined with rubber tree plantations, that give a dark, eerie feel to the drive even in the daylight. (read more photos)

Does that dog have rabies?

IMG_7598
I thought this coconut was my friend.

by Azure

When we were in Thailand in 2006, I thought I had contracted Rabies. We were sitting at the port, waiting to be picked up and this golden lab came over to us and started looking at us, tail wagging. I had just spent $1200 getting all sorts of crazy vaccines and was super paranoid. The dog circled a few times, looking at me in particular. It finally made its approach from behind and came in for a lick. (read more)

Tattooed man at the Wat

j-fucking-crew, Bangkok, Thailand
Holy crap, is that Blue Steel?

by Mike

I lined up an amazing picture – he was lounging on a platform, smoking his cigarette in front of the river and the smoke was just radiant in the sun, filling the whole frame. It would have been beautiful, surreal, powerful. On the hand in which he held the cigarette was a tattoo of a cross, so I asked if I could take a picture of the tattoo (intending to get the smoke as well), but of course that ruined it – his reaction was to throw away the cigarette and remove his shirt. What can a man do with a pricey bird?

Bird man, Bangkok, Thailand
The bird is smiling enough for both of them.

by Mike

Well, I ran into this guy and his bird in an alley in Chinatown. He said the bird was worth 12,000 Baht ($400!)… apparently it’s a very special creature. He wasn’t even trying to sell it to me, he was just bragging. I asked how it tasted, which he thought was pretty funny. No, seriously…

Gambling in a Bangkok shantytown

A smoke, Bangkok, Thailand
Rolling the dice… WITH YOUR HEALTH!

by Mike

Tonight, when I got home from the market I couldn’t decide what to do: get a massage, get something to eat, meditate, write in my journal or go for a walk in the slum I noticed by the side of the tracks. After much deliberation I realized the only reason I wouldn’t go to the slum was that I was afraid, and being afraid is no excuse for not doing something you want to do.

Arriving in Petchaburi

Nothin wrong with kids & dogs. Chinatown, Bangkok, Thailand.

by Mike & Nicole

This morning someone asked me if I was ok. I was fine, I just wasn’t smiling. Stoic, you know, to show I wasn’t taking their culture for granted, not treating it like an amusement park.

Thai drivers are crazier than you

IMG_5860
Dude looking at me as traffic pulls away. Bangkok, Thailand.

by Mike

Have you ever:
… driven on the shoulder against traffic?
… pulled a u-turn during rush hour on a 6-lane road in the middle of the block?
… been let off a bus two lanes away from the curb in busy traffic?
… taken a left by first crossing into oncoming traffic, then turning the corner into oncoming traffic, then crossing back over onto the correct side of the road?

I saw all these things today. This, along with the Thai’s brazen approach to food-handling, makes me wonder how any Thai people are still alive.

Here’s the plan

I’m in Bangkok now (it’s hot) and Azure will be coming over in about a week. We’ll then fly directly to Bali, Indonesia, where we’ll spend at least a month, maybe two if we can get our visas extended. After that we fly back to Seattle via Bangkok on February 12. We’ll have a week or so at home, then head to France for Part II of the trip, as it worked well last year.

Enjoy!

We’ve had health care abroad.

Azure and I have had plenty of health care encounters abroad, so I thought I’d tell some of the fun stories about how we get treated when we leave our own country.

“If there is a god, then why do stupid thing happen to smart people?”

Hello Everyone!

We made it to Bangkok, then immediately through Bangkok without much incident. We’re currently in Chiang Mai, our fourth and final night here (this time around), tomorrow we’re taking a bus to the Laos border, then hopping on a “slow boat” down to Luang Pragang. I have no idea what to expect, except it’s apparently a French city? I’ll be the judge of that.

Bangkok

Bangkok, Thailand
A woman in Bangkok accidentally showed interest in a bracelet

Hello Everyone!

Being on the sailboat for 5 days was interesting, we learned a lot about how self-sufficient a person would have to be to live as cheap as they do. I’d like to try some day (be able to live comfortably on virtually nothing), but not right now. Unfortunately it ended up being a bit cramped on the boat (7 people) and we didn’t really liking the guy who was the captain. He was arrogant and didn’t listen to a word we said. So after a few days in a harbor we jumped ship and stayed at this little beach called Ko Ma on the island of Koh Pha Ngan.

Sailboat Time!

Hi Everyone!

So Azure and I spent a week or so on Ko Lanta and just loved it – the best thing we did was rent a motorscooter ($5 a day) and scoot all over the island. Most of the people who visit Ko Lanta stay on the west coast of the island, so Az and I made our way over to the east coast and biked through the little towns that aren’t as touristy – old chinese fishing villages, a community that lives in the mangroves (swamp-like forests that protected the community from the tsunami – currently under threat from resource harvesting), groups of monkeys, etc.

Thainksgiving

Hi!

On Sunday, after taking care of a bunch of stuff having to do with stolen credit card information, Az and I flew out of Singapore and directly to Krabi, Thailand. In my first email from Singapore I compared the city to India. That was completely wrong. Singapore is more like a huge shopping mall, with banks here and there. Neither of us liked it much, but when we got to Thailand there were better associations… the smell of burning trash (really, it’s good), mangy dogs (not as good), poorly lit roads… I guess that kind of stuff is growing on me.
