Might as well…
by Mike
Azure and I came across a group of strong, wet ladies at a river. They were carrying dirt on their heads, but we couldn’t tell where they were digging. So we followed them down to the river… (read more)
They put the baskets on their heads and duck underwater using a smaller basket to scoop sand from the riverbed.

When the basket was full they walked up the riverbank and asked us for money to take their picture. I gave them $2 and told them to split it among the 4 of them, but they insisted the price was $2 per person. It’s always fun when something like this turns into a barter. You know you’re really getting below the surface and touching people’s hearts.

did you ever determine what they wanted the dirt for?
So did you find out why they were dredging the river?
They were digging up dirt/sand, then carrying it up and dumping it at the side of the road. We’ve seen a lot of dirt/sand being used all over Bali for either bricks or tiles (for roofing), which they heat in a furnace by burning the fibrous part of coconuts. One picture I wish we’d gotten was a house with an enormous oven and on one side a pile of coconut scraps, on the other a pile of tiles ready to be fired.
I’m not sure why they were using the dirt/sand from the bottom of the river and not from some other place.
See reply above.
